SAN JOSE, Calif. The San Jose Earthquakes drew with FC Dallas 2-2 on Wednesday night at PayPal Park in front of 15,304 fans.
The Earthquakes drew first blood in the 21st minute when with a defender draped Josef Martínez assisted Ian Harkes on a long-range blast that beat Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes to make it 1-0.
However, the visitors would answer in the third minute of stoppage time when in transition, Petar Musa slotted the ball in the back of the net after a rebound to make it 1-1.
After intermission, the Quakes almost retook the lead in the 74th minute when Cristian Espinoza crossed a ball in from the right wing and Lalas Abubakar almost tapped it into his own net, but it hit the crossbar.
Instead, Dallas would capture a 2-1 lead in the 85th minute when Ramiro and Logan Farrington combined to assist on a tap-in for Musa, his second of the match.
The Quakes would rapidly answer the following minute to salvage a point, as Jack Skahan’s left-footed cross found Martínez for a clinical header to knot the game once more for a 2-2 final margin. For this two goal contributions, Martínez was named Northern California Honda Dealers Man of the Match.

Santa Clara July 5, 2025,
The San Jose Earthquakes and New York Red Bulls battled to a tense 1–1 draw in front of a lively crowd of 17,580 at PayPal Park Saturday night.
The visitors struck first in the 19th minute when Emil Forsberg latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Peter Stroud and slotted it past goalkeeper Daniel. San Jose, struggling to break down New York’s defense in the first half, found their equalizer after the break.
In the 58th minute, Cristian Espinoza’s dangerous cross was inadvertently turned into the net by Red Bulls defender Mohammed Sofo, setting up a frantic final half hour.
The match took a dramatic turn just six minutes later when San Jose’s DeJuan Jones was sent off for a second yellow card, forcing the Quakes to play with ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Bruce Arena’s side held firm under relentless Red Bulls pressure.
New York thought they had snatched a late winner in the 83rd minute, but Sean Nealis’ header was disallowed after VAR judged Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to be narrowly offside in the buildup.
Emotions boiled over moments later as Red Bulls substitute Raheem Edwards was ejected from the bench for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The draw leaves San Jose sitting sixth in the Western Conference at 7–7–7 (28 points), nine points back of high flying, 1st place San Diego (39pts) and just two points ahead of a four team logjam all fighting for the last three playoff spots out West while New York holds eighth in the East with an 8–7–6 record (30 points).
Nine teams make the playoffs in each conference and games get bigger and bigger for San Jose down the stretch. New York was the last team from the Eastern Conference that the Quakes will play in the season with all the remaining teams being from the West.
Both clubs now shift their focus to U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals: the Earthquakes will host Austin FC on July 8, and the Red Bulls travel to face the Philadelphia Union on July 9.
San Jose showed just how hard it has become to shut them down as four players scored goals in their 4-2 at Dallas. The Quakes overcame a 90-min weather Delay before the game started and a 1-0 Dallas lead scoring 4 second half goals in the win.
The Quakes are now 7-7-5 on the season and the 4 goal outburst put them back on top by a goal (39) over 2nd place San Diego for most goals in the MLS. Christian Espinoza was behind the Quakes outburst nothing 3 more assits in the game and now has 11 in 2025.
San Jose's 7 wins tie what they accomplished all of last season as they prepare to take on their good friends from LA, the Los Angeles Galaxy at Stanford Stadium Saturday night.
The Earthquakes will end a somewhat restful July with a home game against their beloved rivals from down South the Los Angeles Galaxy. San Jose will come into this game after a Wednesday night affair in hit and muggy Dallas. Game time is 7:30pm and it will be followed up by one of the largest drone shows you will ever see.
Over 40,000 tickets have already been sold a week before the game and with San Jose's recent firm look for this one to be close to a sell out.
It was a spectacle for sure. Inter Miami travels like a rock band with Lionel Messi on the team.
Making his first visit to the Bay since joining Inter Miami Messi did not score buy he also did not disappoint coming close a couple of times.
The game got off to a fast start, maybe a little to fast for Quakes head coach Bruce Arenas. Miami found the back of the net just 43-seconds into the game.
To the delight and relief of the home crowd and themselves San Jose answered right back 3min later and it was game on.
The game would end in an entertaining 3 all tie and the Earthquakes saw that they can compete on a big stage.
San Jose is in a current 7 game unbeaten streak, it's longest in a few years. It has been fueled by both offense and defense with two shutouts mixed in those 7 games.
In a back and forth 3 all tie against Houston at home Preston Judd scored a brace and San Jose picked themselves up from a 0-2 hole to take a 3-2 lead in the 76' when Daniel Munie came flying into the 6-yard box to score with a diving header. Houston scored a 90' equalizer.
Two points lost or a point gained ?. Teams want those extra two points when they are winning after the 85'. Playoff teams secure those extra points whenever possible and those type of games will be a test for San Jose.
The Earthquakes are on teams radar. Anytime you lead the league in goals teams know they need a special game plan just for your.
San Jose has so many scoring options you can't just concentrate on one or two players. A big key to their season will be how few goals the Earthquakes allow.
That depth helped head coach Bruce Arenas juggle his players playing time to help keep players fresh during a brutal May that features nine games for San Jose.
The Earthquakes play just 3 in June. Next up for the Quakes are road games (of course) at the LA Galaxy May 28th and St Louis May 31st.
The road trip will reach 4 games before the Quakes play another home game, June 28th in the California Classico' at Stanford University against the LA Galaxy.
San Jose won their 3rd game in a row and with their 2-0 whitewash of Colorado Saturday night the Earthquakes moved into 7th place in the Western Conference and that my friends is a playoff spot in the making.
Ok there are no parades or keys to the city given out for 7th place in May, but for a team that has struggled the past few years for goals and wins this season has started like a step in the right direction for San Jose.
After a first half that saw each team come close to scoring DeJuan Jones and Victor Costa played one of the prettiest one - two passes you will ever see, across half of a very crowded penalty area.
Jones got the ball back in the middle of the area and scored, slotting a shot past the Colorado keeper. The Quakes defense made that hold up pitching their second clean sheet of the season and the first since game 1 of the season.
Christian Arango created his own goal in the second half when he deflected an attempted clearance just out side the box before beating the defensive and flicking the ball passed Colorado's keeper to put the game to bed.
Now at 5-1-6 San Jose is playing their best soccer in a while and it comes at a time when the schedule is pretty demanding.
When Inter Miami hits town for a mid week game at PayPal Park it will be San Jose's 4th game in 11 days.
New head coach Bruce Arenas has got to be pleased with how San Jose has responded to their first real test of the 2025 season.
Heading into this tough stretch San Jose was 3-1-6 and despite scoring a bunch of goals the Quakes were floundering.
"We’re getting better, and obviously when you win three games in a row, there’s a consistency there. The group’s getting better. We’ve got a long way to go, but I’m pleased with the progress we’re making.” said head coach Bruce Arenas after the game.
Now comes the bright lights and the hoopla surrounding Lionel Messi and Inter Miami who will be making their only West coast stop in the 2025 MLS season when they play San Jose at PayPal Park May 14th.
Game time is 7:30 pm.
Christian Espinoza scored twice and the San Jose Earthquakes 4 goals left them with an MLS best 24 thru the first 11 games of the season.
The goals were Espinozas 4th and 5th of the young season.
San Jose played one of their better defensive games games against Portland. The Quakes have given up 20 goals which us why the win over Portland only increased their record to 4-1-6.
Espinoza got the party started when he found the back of the net in the 16'. He didn't wait long to get goal number two in the game and 5th in the season.
What turned out to be the game winner came in the 24'. By the time Ousseni Burda tapped in San Jose’s 4th goal in the 88' the Quakes had all but secured all 3pts from the game.
DeJuan Jones had two assists and Burda added an assist to go along with his 2 goal of the season.
Next up is a match up with the USL Championship side Sacramento FC in the US Open Cup. Sacramento, who is making a Bay area tour, is fresh off winning at the Oakland Roots 1-0 Sunday and will be taking on the Quakes on a short three day rest.
Game time is 7:30pm at PayPal Park.
San Jose could not over come a 3 goal blitz midway thru the first half in their loss to SKC. San Jose opened the game with two scoring chances in the first 14 minutes of the game.
Josef Martinez got off a poor shot at the top of the box in the 3rd minute. Christian Espinoza forced a save in the 14th minute.
Then it happened. From the 18'- 24' SKC scored three goals. The game wasn't over but the Quakes had little room for error if they were going to come back and win this one.
San Jose got two back before the half. First defender Rodriguez played Martinez into the box and Josef scored his 5th goal in the last 3 games.
Christian Arango scored the first of his two goals in the 42' and just like that San Jose was back in the game.
Arango added a goal from the spot in the second half but by then Sporting KC had 5 goals on the board.
San Jose is now 3-1-5 ahead of their next contest a road game at Columbus April 26th before returning home to face Portland May 3rd (7:30pm).
Sacramento Republic FC comes calling May 7th (7:30pm) in the US Open Cup.
The man of the match was forward Josef Martinez whose hat trick made MLS history. Martinez scored in the 16th, 81 and 92' against the overmatched DC United.
That 92' goal gave Martinez his MLS record 7th hat trick and Josef now has 118 career MLS goals in his career.
The Earthquakes could not follow up their 6-1 win last time out with a win falling behind 2-0 to the Los Angeles Football Club before a 96' Christian Espinoza goal made it look close.
It was a 0-0 game until LAFC got on the board in the 63'. San Jose then gave up one of the worst goals you can give up next and it pretty much sank their chances to win.
In the 86' Quakes goalie Daniel played a back pass to the middle of the field only to have LAFC's Timmy Tillman pounce on the mistake.
Tillman passed the ball to an open Olivier Gioud who's shot from just outside the box forced the now over worked Daniel into a nice save but the ball bounced right to Denis Bouanga who put home the game winner.
This is a game that could come back and haunt the Quakes when that playoff push comes at the end of the season.
San Jose had more possession, more shots and shots on target than LAFC and when you play like that on the road you need come away with at least a point.
San Jose is 3-1-4 good for 10pts, nine off the pace being set by first place Vancouver and in 9th place in the MLS Western Conference.
Next up for the Quakes is a Saturday night home game against Sporting KC. Game time is 7:30 pm.
San Jose has started out the 2025 MLS campaign a very upbeat 2-1 with a win at home and on the road early on in this 2025 MLS season.
Christian Espinoza fueled the Earthquakes 4-0 season opening win over Real Salt Lake with 2 assists. The Quakes scored 3 second half goals to win pulling away.
Josef Martinez showed he has some goals left in him with the game winner at Sporting KC. The goal came in the 19' making it 2-0 San Jose.
SKC could only muster up a penalty for their only goal. Anytime you can shut a team out in the run of play on the road you have a chance to win.
Hernan Lopez made the job harder when he was sent off with a red card in the 57'. Teams that make runs deep into the playoffs win games like this.
Sure it's way early to talk about any Earthquakes run in the playoffs but after a season where the Quakes gave up an astounding 73 goals 2 goals in 3 games is a good start for San Jose.
San Jose fell 0-1 to Minnesota at home Saturday night. The Quakes play 5 of their next 7 games at PayPal Park. It is a great chance to stack up on some points.
Colorado comes calling March 15th at 7:30pm
The Quakes have added some scoring threats to the line up ahead of the 2025 MLS campaign. In comes youngster Ousseni Burda, an exciting forward from Stanford by way of Burkina Faso (West Africa).
San Jose went out and brought in veteran Josef Martinez who at one point in his career was the leagues top goal scorer while playing for Atlanta.
Back are Christian Espinoza and Hernan Lopez, an Argentine duo that was starting to click the second half of last season.
New head coach Bruce Arenas wants to give Espinoza more targets to pass to and increase his assists from the 13 he had a year ago.
2024 signee Amahl Pellegrino led the Quakes with 7 goals last year. The departed Jeremy Ebobisse and Hernan were right behind him with 6 each.
DC United's Christian Benteke led the league with 23 goals last season.
San Jose scored just 39 goals last year, 4th worst in the league. Even more important the Earthquakes gave up a MLS worst 78 goals.
That's not a recipe for success. Better defense creates more possession of the ball which gives you more scoring chances and more goals.
Arenas knows that wins start at the defense end of the pitch. 78 goals in 34 games is a Tick over two a contest. It's hard to win spotting the other team 2 goals a game while scoring just one goal per game yourself.
