USA off and running in the Gold Cup

📸 Eric Taylor

Team USA could not have asked for a better start on the pitch then what they got in their 5-0 shutout of Trinidad and Tobago in both teams opening round match up in the 2025 Gold Cup.

San Jose is back in the playoff picture

📸 Eric Taylor

It seems like San Jose made most if not all the right moves this past off season bringing in head coach Bruce Arenas, players such as Christian Arango, Josef Martinez and now DeJuan Jones.

San Jose is the highest scoring team in the MLS (32 goals) with the highest scoring trio right now. Arango has 8 goals, Martinez has 6 and Christian Espinoza has 4.

That's tough to stop with any three players capable of taking over a game.

San Jose’s road win in Colorado might have been just their second road win of the season. It already matched the number of road wins the Quakes had all of last year.

San Jose fall at Columbus 2-1

📸 Eric Taylor

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Columbus Crew 2-1 on Saturday night at Lower.com Field in front of 20,737 fans.

The hosts opened the scoring off a free kick in the 29th minute when Sean Zawadzki finished a Diego Rossi service from the left wing.

San Jose would equalize in the 40th minute when Dave Romney intercepted a loose ball and found midfieder Beau Leroux, whose through ball was expertly chipped by Josef Martínez over Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte into the back of the net.

The goal was Martinez's 6th goal of the young season and his 122st of his MLS career. Martinez did not play in the second half due to what head coach Bruce Arenas stated was a tight hamstring.

"I believe that was his sixth goal of the year. That's pretty good for the first 10 games. He's doing his job. He's a No. 9 (center forward). He's supposed to score goals and he has. So a lot of credit to Josef over our first 10 games.”

“He had a little bit of a tight hamstring and we thought it was best take him out and not put him in the position to get injured. So that was my decision at halftime.

Columbus came out the gate firing in the second half, with a Rossi attempt hitting the post in the 52nd minute. San Jose answered in the 56th minute on the other end when Leroux stole the ball in the box and cut back, but his right-footed curling attempt was just wide of the far post.

Columbus would get the game winner when Max Arfsten  found paydirt in the 62'. The Quakes almost answered right back when Ian Harkes feed Preston Judd a beautiful ball into the area but Judd's attempt went just wide of the target.

"We played well enough to get something out of this game We picked it up in the last 15. Columbus is a good team, possession-oriented, high-risk, high-reward for them, that's their football. They gave us some chances that we should have put away".   said Arenas after the game.

The Black and Blue will now travel home next Saturday, May 3, to take on the Portland Timbers in a match presented by Valley Health Plan.

Kickoff from PayPal Park will take place at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV (English/Spanish), as well as on local radio via KSFO 810 AM (English) and 1370 AM La Kaliente (Spanish).

Liverpool thrash Spurs win 20th League title

📸 Geoff Birdsong

Liverpool winning the league title has not really been in doubt for the past month. Seeking to clinch the English record 20th title with a home game against Tottinem Hotspurs needing only a point to make themselves lords of English football once again.

It's been 5 years since Liverpool were Champs. They have spent the past four years watching Manchester City rin ruffshod over the rest of the league.

Not this season. Liverpool has been top of the Premier league practically from the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

Liverpool has been so dominate thus season that title has been secured with four games left on the schedule. 25-7--2 was more then good enough for Liverpool  this year.

Arsenal had been hot on the heels of Liverpool but could not keep pace with Liverpool and will have to settle for Champions League football next year.

San Jose celebrates 30yrs in style

📸 Eric Taylor

The San Jose Earthquakes may not be a first place team but they are improving little by little as evident by the Quakes 6-1 thrashing of DC United on the 30th anniversary of the current MLS.

Goals came early and often for San Jose who scored by the 8th minute  and were 3 up in the 20' after Christian Espinoza scored from the spot.

2024 Calsico De Leyendas

📸 Luis Espinoza

Some of the biggest names to ever play for Mexican club giants and bitter rivals Chivas De Guadalajara and Club America (Mexico City) played an exhibition match at the home of the San Jose Earthquakes, PayPal Park.

The likes of Ramon Ramirez, former Mexican international Ramón Morales and club idols Héctor Reynoso and Chatón Henríquez hit the playing field and have some fun while playing a little soccer in between.

The Classico De Leyendas gave both teams fans a chance to see some of their all time favorites play again and just root for the teams that they love.

Club America would go on to win the game 3-1 with their final two goals coming in the second half.

The event was put on by San Jose's Sports Media. Sports media's Sergio Sanchez wants these kind of games to become  common place here in the San Francisco Bay Area.
